CUSTOMER BACKGROUND - NORTHERN STORES

Northern Stores, a large retail and grocery chain in Canada with operations in remote Northern locations and smaller towns across the country, required an efficient system to handle daily transactions and inventory tracking, as well as monitoring of their product shipments.

COMMUNICATIONS CHALLENGE FACED

Many sites did not have efficient or reliable high speed Internet connectivity to assist the company with their needs. Many shipments were lost upon delivery across waterways, while financial monitoring was inaccurate and inefficient. In addition, Northern stores is often the only retail outlet available in the remote communities, and residents have been relying on them to conduct personal banking activities.

INFOSAT'S SOLUTION

Infosat outfitted the company with a Connect system to operate its debit card system and wide area network (WAN), connecting all store sites across Canada to a head office in Manitoba. The cash register, sales and inventory amounts are updated daily at the site with all necessary information being directly transferred securely back to head office. The system also allows for payroll and credit/debit card transactions to be transmitted through the WAN network to the company's intranet. The card system enables customers to deposit cheques or transfer funds at any of the company's dozens of stores, then make debit purchases or obtain cash from a bank machine.

ROPOS

ROPOS based in Nova Scotia is a remotely operated vehicle that is managed by a not-for-profit corporation called The Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility.  The vehicle was mainly constructed for scientific use by International Submarine Engineering (ISE) of Vancouver, BC.  This remotely operated vehicle has the ability to deploy and recover heavy packages to and from the seafloor in a controlled fashion.  With these capabilities, the Remotely Operated Cable Laying System (ROCLS) gives cabled observatory managers, engineers and scientists increased flexibility in planning their deployments and installations. 


Their Challenge
ROPOS can work as deep as 5000 meters and spend hours or even days working continuously at the bottom of the sea.  The ship transmits power and the computer sends down an electrical-optical cable to the vehicle and in turn sends up data and video images via six optical fibers that are at the core of the cable.  Originally, the scientist would have to be onboard to view the dive, and therefore needed a solution to provide efficient and reliable communication system to view the dive from their Vancouver office.

The Result
By implementing Infosat's Marine Stabilized Antenna, it is the optimal solution for high-speed two-way broadband communication.  With a dedicated backhaul to provide Real-time streaming video, the scientists can now simply control a  ROPOS dive onshore.
